New Courses

EDUC521 Different Perspectives on Teaching and Communicating

This course, designed for educators, examines issues related to promoting learning opportunities in the classroom for all students, including effective approaches to encourage collaboration among different colleagues, staff, parents, and students. Interpersonal communication skills – to include speaking, listening, reading, and writing - and their effect on individuals, organizations, and communities will be discussed. Topics examined include ethnic, cultural, gender, class, religious, and linguistic differences.

EDUC599 Issues in TESOL Education

This course provides an examination of cultural groups, including aspects of communication, belief systems, and value orientations, as well as patterns of thinking and behaving with implications for instruction. Basics of second language acquisition theories and practices and fostering home/school relationships for K-12 learners are explored.

EDUC634 Co-Teaching and Collaboration for All Learners

This course examines the role of the educators working collaboratively in various models, including co-teaching. This approach to effective instruction will focus on the classroom factors relating to the nature of the student and the essential meaning of the curriculum. Particular emphasis will be placed on classroom elements that educators can differentiate – or modify – to increase the likelihood that each student will learn as much as possible, as efficiently as possible. This would include the areas of content, process, products, affect and learning environment. The idea of differentiating instruction to accommodate the different ways that students learn often involves working with others to reach this goal.

FINC610 Financial Institutions

This course provides students with an overview of the basic contributions in the modern theory of corporate finance and financial institutions. The course utilizes a methodology approach, requiring students to master the necessary technical tools for each topic.

Topics covered in the course may include capital structure, distribution policy, financial intermediation, incomplete financial contracting, initial and seasoned public offerings, market for corporate control, and product market corporate finance interactions. Other topics offered in this course are corporate reorganization and bankruptcy, financing in imperfect markets, and security design under adverse selection and moral hazards.

Students will also conduct an in-depth analysis of the financial system in which banks, other intermediaries, and non-financial organizations function.

FINC615 Investment Management

For this course, students will study financial markets – principally equity markets – from an investment decision-making perspective. The course utilizes a set of conceptual frameworks and analytical tools, applying them to particular investments and investment strategies chosen from a fairly broad array of companies, securities, and institutional contexts.

The focus will be on adding value across the spectrum of decisions ranging from position-taking in particular securities to portfolio risk management, as well as the delegation to and oversight of professional investment managers. Also, the course explores the competitive dynamics among investment organizations, products, and markets.

FINC620 International Finance

This course provides an understanding of current academic research in international finance and international macroeconomics. Students will learn the tools for conducting field research and will have a comprehensive overview of currency, equity, and international bond markets around the world.

Institutional, theoretical issues, and current trends will also be analyzed. A strong emphasis will be placed on the hedging techniques and tools used to reduce the risks associated with those financial markets.

FINC625 Entrepreneurship Finance

This course is designed to provide students with the ability to analyze the various processes and sources of seed and venture capital for funding a new enterprise – debt and equity. Planning for the funding aspect of a new financial venture is critical, and this course addresses alternative sources of funds for carrying out a venture’s mission.

The Finance concentration covers a variety of financial subjects relevant to business management, commercial and investment banking, and government finance. This stackable NanoCert is intended for professionals who want to teach postsecondary and other adult learners in a variety of settings such as corporations, government organizations, healthcare agencies, community colleges, and other education contexts. Courses prepare trainers and educators to integrate digital tools/technology in their teaching. Topics include pedagogy, andragogy, characteristics of adult learners, integrating technology into instruction, fair use, copyright, legal and ethical issues associated with online learning, designing instructional activities, and more.

Master of Arts in Human Resource Management

The Master of Arts in Human Resource Management explores advanced concepts in human resource management. Coursework reviews the laws, rules, regulations, and issues impacting the global workforce and human resource management. During the program, students will conduct research and develop strategies in areas such as employee motivation and retention, employment laws, and employee development. Sociology is a discipline that focuses on human behavior and interaction.  Studying the role of the individual as an inherently social being, sociological training helps prepare students to develop a reflective understanding of human nature.  Examining the nature of the public sphere, addressing the breadth of humanity and using an identity framework are sociological themes emerging at the core of current social movements. The Master of Education in Educational Leadership program is designed for current educators who wish to specialize in K-12 administrator and supervisory functions in public and/or private educational school settings. Each educational leadership concentration provides a different focus and offers practical applications, as well as the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to be successful as an educational leader.

This online master's degree is meant for practicing teachers seeking administrator roles which do not require state certification.

Master of Education: Higher Education Administration

The M.Ed. in Higher Education Administration program comprises 36 semester hours of study combining a 24 semester hour foundational set of courses plus various 12 semester hour concentrations. The program foundational courses feature a broad base of exposure to key elements integrating historical, social, ethical, financial, legal, political, cultural, and student affairs aspects of higher education administration and management. The three specialized concentration options are Online Administration, Leadership and Supervision, and Professional Coaching. The program focuses on current and prospective educators and administrators whose desire is to gain knowledge and skills which are often required in fields such as academic administration, college/university leadership, community college administration/leadership, program and curriculum development and evaluation, institutional research and advancement, online education, educational technology, financial supervision, and enrollment management.

The M.Ed. in Student Affairs in Higher Education program will help to prepare students for professional responsibilities in academic advising, campus leadership, student services, student life, career services, financial management, and other leadership roles within higher education institutions. This program uniquely combines educational leadership courses and student affairs courses to develop skills that are often needed in student affairs professionals who make a positive impact in higher education. Coursework focuses on leadership development; administrative functions; applying theory to practice; social and cultural competency; organizational theory; assessment; and current principles, approaches, and practices in student affairs. Distance education practicum experiences will provide real-world experience at the culmination of the program.

In addition to integrated coursework, students select an area of concentration from one of the following options: campus leadership, academic advising, and career coaching and services. Student learning outcomes and curriculum are aligned to American College Personnel Association (ACPA®), National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA®), and Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) professional competency standards, depending on the concentration selected.

In the sports and fitness fields, students with advanced business skills and sports-related knowledge are needed to help advance the success of athletic programs and individuals. This program has achieved specialized accreditation through the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA).

The mission of the American Public University System’s Nursing Program is to “provide quality, affordable, and accessible higher education for professional registered nurses to foster lifelong learning through a spirit of inquiry in order to prepare students for service and leadership roles in a diverse and global society.”

The online RN to MSN degree provides Associate and diploma degree prepared Registered Nurses an accelerated pathway to obtaining a Master of Science in Nursing degree while also obtaining a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. The RN to MSN degree is designed to facilitate the immediate and lifelong professional and personal development needs of Registered Nurses in the three areas of Practitioner, Scientist and Leader. Master of Arts in Management - Concentration in Organizational Leadership

Examines various leadership theories and models used by contemporary leaders in management. Looks at the effective leader’s role in the workplace as it relates to decision making, conflict resolution, motivation, and risk taking. Addresses contemporary leadership theories and models to develop and nurture followership, varied workplace settings, ethics, motivation, and knowledge management.

Doctoral Programs

APUS professional practice doctorates are multidisciplinary degrees that address intellectual, cultural, and organizational challenges in the respective profession of study. These programs, which embrace a scholar-practitioner model, are preparing the next generation of global leaders to advance their fields. This transformational approach concurrently integrates and develops knowledge, skills, findings, and insights applied to solve or provide greater understanding of complex problems. Likewise, we aim to advance theory and practice to enhance the related disciplines, areas of professional practice, and communities wherein our students, faculty, and University serve.

A Professional Practice Doctorate is an applied degree that focuses on the scholar-practitioner model. In this program, you will conduct research related to your professional experience to bridge theory and practice, advance knowledge in the field, and contribute to organizational change. While maintaining the rigor of a doctoral program, the emphasis on application of theory to practice differentiates the applied doctorate from the traditional PhD program.

Program Framework

Students will progress through the coursework with options for three elective courses. In addition to coursework, students will complete virtual residencies, an ePortfolio with oral defense of the portfolio, a dissertation proposal with an oral defense, and a dissertation with oral defense.

Residencies: Doctoral programs contain residencies at crucial program points.

  1. The first residency is part of your Doctoral Foundations course, which establishes expectations for the program, develops rapport with fellow students, and introduces students to doctoral faculty.
  2. The second residency depends on the specific degree program and may include presentations at professional conferences or international experience.
  3. The third residency is an 8-week course that focuses on program requirements, such as the e-portfolio defense, committee formation, the practicum and preparing the dissertation proposal.

Program Description

The Master of Science in Nursing program helps to prepare you to be an effective leader in the nursing profession and to be an agent of change in the delivery of health care. The transformational changes occurring in healthcare today make advanced nursing practice essential to the provision of safe, patient-centered care. As a nurse educator or nurse leader, you can help lead the change to move nursing into the future.

The master's degree program in nursing at APUS is accredited by the  Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education.

Programmatic Admission Requirements

This program is currently not open for admission to residents of the District of Columbia and Washington.

For this program, the following documentation is required and must be provided prior to course registration:

  • Official transcripts showing a conferred Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree from a program accredited by: Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education ( CCNE), Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing ( ACEN®), Commission for Nursing Education Accreditation ( CNEA®), or Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing ( CASN). 
  • Current and active unencumbered registered nurse (RN) in a state or province where practicums will be conducted
  • Minimum cumulative Grade Point Average (GPA) 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the baccalaureate nursing degree
  • Successful completion of an undergraduate level statistics course with a “C” or higher
  • Current resume/CV
  • Signed statement of understanding (SOU)
  • 500-600 word statement of purpose and goals for graduate education*

*Writing style should be scholarly and coherent with no grammatical errors. Provide in 500-600 words a description of relevant work experience, and clearly articulated reasons for applying to the master’s program. Long-term goals or professional career aspirations should be included.

Note: You must complete this program within 5 years of starting your first nursing (NURS) course.
