In this course, students will learn the basics of retail management functions, principles and techniques found in today's marketplace. Students will also explore the ideal characteristics and responsibilities of an effective department or store manager, ranging from legal and safety scenarios to understanding the role and importance of logistics in various retail establishments. RTMG200 Customer Relations (3 semester hours)
This course introduces students to the basics of customer relations functions and describes the ideal characteristics of good customer relations in both small and large retail organizations. This class will also discuss effective customer relations strategies, effective listening, oral and written communication, analytical and problem-solving skills, and teamwork based on the organization's commitment to meeting customer needs while making customers feel welcome and valued. Students will also learn the methods and approaches to addressing problems, including the management of conflicts when they occur.

RTMG201 Retail Inventory Management (3 semester hours)
This class in retail inventory management will present the significant factors in managing a business’ profits at a steady margin and reducing theft and loss of inventory. Students will learn to distinguish between large and small retail organizations and become familiar with variations in inventory management based upon the nature of the inventory (such as perishable, seasonal, and fashion). The course will also review the skills, tools, and resources required for effective inventory management, as well as the strategies for keeping inventory current and various ways to identify and mitigate inventory management challenges.

RTMG202 Risk Management (3 semester hours)
This course enables students to identify, define, and explain risk situations and to develop management concepts, techniques and processes and understand from a company perspective the impact of safety and compliance policies. To understand risk management students will examine risk management origins and trends from an insurance perspective in retail and develop skills in interpreting the impact that unresolved risk management issues can have on compliance, safety and the bottom line. Risk management is about insurance and developing policies to mitigate risk. This strategic focus and its application are covered in this class.

During this course, students will develop a basic vocabulary and application of finance functions and principles. Students will describe the importance of knowing retail based calculations such as retail pricing, markup, and gross profit. They will relate the concepts of retail math (initial margin, markdown, shrinkage, gross profit dollars and percents) to finance and to the overall business success of the retail enterprise. They will define and apply ending inventory, retail cost, cost compliment, net profit, net sales, controllable expense, and non-controllable expense. Students will examine how retail finance can be applied to products and services in a wide variety of situations and how to review a project and evaluate the financial situation.

RTMG300 Retail Strategy (3 semester hours)
This course in retail strategy will teach students to use analytical techniques for diagnosing the competitive position of retail-focused strategy and discover specific retail options to suit particular markets. Students will discover the strategic perspectives of retail management; examine essential concepts in the retail industry; determine how retail businesses increase returns; and learn ways to create economic value for owners and stakeholders. This course looks at new or significantly improved service concepts such as new customer interaction channels and approaches, new distribution systems, and innovative technological concepts. In this retail operations class, students will study how to manage the day-to-day functions of retail establishments, such as department stores, grocery stores and specialty shops. This course is designed to provide a foundational knowledge in digital retail technology and how it is used by retailer, both large and small. As technology has changed the landscape of retail processes, it has also created a necessity for decision-makers to have the ability to use various methods to evolve in the global retail market. Students will learn how to use predictive analytics to help organizations problem-solve retail objectives. In addition, students will explore new ventures retailers are taking to overcome challenges in the market place through implementing digital inventory and supply chain management. This course focuses on digital strategies in retail. Students will have the opportunity to discuss and review terminology, concepts, best practices and strategies in digital retail. Topics will include the creation and implementation of digital strategies and digital market planning used by successful retailers. Students will explore the retailer’s role in society, providing insights as to how consumers behave as on-line shoppers, what retailers do to create demand, as well as their role in satisfying customer demands in a digital world. This course is designed to provide the student with an in depth understanding of digital merchandising, fashion, retail, and consumer shopping behavior from a digital perspective. Materials that will be covered include digital, social, and mobile platforms as we explore the future of digital merchandising. Students will discuss the increasing role of e-commerce and how mobile technologies are shaping the consumer shopping experience and how to best utilize these tools to drive business success. Students will explore digital merchandising and how promotions and web layout design can affect consumer purchasing and decision-making processes. Students will also explore how trend forecasting, digital marketing and advertising campaigns affect the sale of products in the digital marketplace.

RTMG315 Retail Cybersecurity (3 semester hours)
This Digital Retail Cybersecurity course provides a broad overview of cybersecurity concepts and principles and explores real-world threats facing today’s retailers in a global economy. Students will assess various methods retailers can utilize to avoid security threats on outdated hardware or software. Students will investigate various data breaches throughout the past decade, analyze ransom and malware attacks, and discuss how retailers and consumers are both a part of preventing financial data breaches. In addition, this course includes a discussion on the inherent risks of digital supply chains, third party vendors, and explores the ever-increasing mobile security issues facing retailers.
