Undergraduate NanoCert® in Emergency Management Communications
Program Description
The NanoCert in Emergency Management Communications prepares students to use communication mediums and the needed tools to communicate information successfully and effectively to the community before, during, and after a disaster. The undergraduate NanoCert in the Emergency Management Communications is a three-course program that focuses on the different methods of communications with an emphasis on social media mediums used within emergency and disaster management organizations.
NanoCert Objectives
After successfully completing this NanoCert, the student will be able to:
- Discuss the practical and theoretical social impacts of computer-mediated communication (CMC) systems, including many different types of technologies, such as social networking sites, email, forums, chat, and online games.
- Analyze CMC practices, the social processes and structures that emerge when people use these applications, and the problems and barriers that emerge from use.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of social media messages and their influence on disaster response, homeland security threats, public health emergencies, education, and health and safety messages.
- Post social media messages using emergency management communication practices.
- Critique emergency communication messages effectiveness for achieving a pre-defined goal.
- Describe the effects of misinformation on the immediate and overall response efforts, mitigation activities, preparedness actions, educational goals, intended outcomes, and future engagements.
- Identify the most effective communication strategies and methods of employment within each of the four phases of Emergency Management.
- Differentiate risk communications from crisis communications.
- Develop a Crisis Communication Plan for any organization.
