Undergraduate NanoCert® in Disaster Management Fundamentals

Program Description

The NanoCert in Disaster Management Fundamentals prepares students to manage a disaster from beginning to end. The undergraduate NanoCert in the Disaster Management Fundamentals is a three-course program that focuses on the management of natural and manmade disasters, the protective and mitigation measures required, and the proper response to needed for the various types of disasters.

NanoCert Objectives

After successfully completing this NanoCert, the student will be able to:

  • Describe the reason the Swiss cheese model is used to explain the causation of disaster.
  • Describe the different types of hazards and the protective and mitigation measures used.
  • Identify key challenges in disaster risk reduction.
  • Evaluate the hazmat laws, regulations, and standards on the local, State, and Federal levels.
  • Participate meaningfully in the process of planning, organizing, and training for response to hazmat/terrorist incidents.
  • Develop an incident command organizational structure for a hazmat response using the guidelines set forth in the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
  • Describe the types of nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) agents and their impacts.
  • Evaluate the potential for use of NBC agents on the Homeland.
  • State strategies and technologies for the detection and response to NBC agents and WMD incidents.
